intricate, and open, spaces

Yesterday I visited a surprisingly spacious new gallery at 47 Bergen Street in Brooklyn, NY. Located in an old, freshly renovated  warehouse building, Muriel Guépin Gallery is a treat. The openness of the space, and the friendliness of the staff, encouraged me to spend quite a lot of time there.

I  examined the work of Joan Lurie, shown above, for quite some time. Ms. Lurie works with porcelain and paper clay. The forms start out on the wheel, to be built upon with layers of paper clay and then cut into to create windows into the interior. Porcelain is notorious for not doing what one wants it to do, but Ms. Lurie has developed a technique that thoroughly controls this finicky material. Her works are a study of architectural and organic spaces. The surface is a soft, skin-like matte white glaze with small crazing. I was quite taken in.

I was mesmerized by the work of Paula Overbay, whose layers of color and dots took me  on a celestial journey.

The work of Arpie Gennetian Najaran, a fellow RISD Alum, is what originally brought me to the gallery. Her collages of original drawings, string and found printed matter are full of light, dance, and joy. Thank you, Arpie, for leading me to a wonderful exhibition.

There is something very raw and primal about Jill Platner's work. I feel a little bit invincible when I wear her necklaces. Good for times of vulnerability.

cassini-huygens spacecraft

Photograph by Cassini spacecraft, courtesy of NASA

The Cassini spacecraft has been documenting Saturn and its moons for the past five years. Above is an image of Saturn's largest moon, Titan, revealing its halo-like ring formed in the upper hazes of the moon's extensive atmosphere. This image reminded me of my astronomy plates.

If you have not yet visited NASA's website devoted to Cassini's mission, do so now. It is a visual, and an educational, treat.

arm candy and sweet little plates at anthropology

Beautifully styled, as usual, images of fun bracelets at Anthropology. Of course I think the little porcelain plates steal the show.

sunday suppers: best birthday gift from mom

All photographs are by Karen Mordechai, courtesy of Sunday Suppers

Sunday Suppers is a sensory cooking and dining experience organized by two ingenious women, Casey Solomon and Karen Mordechai. Casey runs a catering business, Karen is a photographer, together they host a cooking class and a sit-down dinner where every single detail is beautifully considered and arranged which Karen beautifully documents on their blog.

Aran Goyoaga, the talent behind the gorgeous blog Cannelle et Vanille, joined the team to demonstrate how to assemble a multi-layered Nectarine, Pistachio and Lemon Mascarpone Tart (a delicious ensemble of flavors and textures). See recipe here. Aran is a pastry chef, a food stylist, a photographer, and an inspiration. Aran recently finished her portfolio website, which is stunning.

For the berry consomme with lemon champagne sorbet I made pink rustic bowls, numbered 1 through 18 (the number of guests at the dinner) which set off Aran's creation beautifully.

The dinner took place in Karen's studio, with views of the East River and the Manhattan skyline. The light was gorgeous as it traveled through the afternoon.

It's the people who attended that made the event so incredible. I loved my conversation with Jessica and Evan, my neighbors at dinner. Jessica is the author of the blog Pictures of Cake. I highly recommend her Chocolate Peanut Butter creation.

Thank you, mom, for such a fulfilling, educational, delicious and inspirational birthday present.

end of summer dresses on etsy

Saying goodbye to summer is hard, but it's a little bit easier in a sensual handmade dress from larimeloom, on etsy. I can see wearing it well into the late fall, keeping the summer with me.

Or one of these elegant handmade linen and cotton dresses from modaspia, on etsy. You know you will look forward to wearing it again next season, and the next... The weather promises to be on the chilly side for the next few days, with a splash of rain, perfect for a light dress with a sweater. Have a wonderful last of summer weekend!

set satisfaction at moss

Urania designed by Trudi Petri and Sigmund Schutz in 1938

Etrange Vegetation designed by Elisabeth Garouste and Mattia Bonetti in 2001

Neuosier designed by Friedrich Elais Meyer in 1776

If you are looking for a unique table setting, moss on line carries a wonderful range of beautiful porcelain dishes. Yes, some are over $1000 per place setting, but others are barely above $100. Even just web-browsing through the sets is so so satisfying. Click on the images for more information on each.

P. S. Moss has a wedding registry...

sunday suppers update...

Take a look at Sunday Suppers recent posting of the gorgeous table setting from the Supper that I attended (thanks to Mom). The dainty menu cards were designed by Thoughtful Day.

The setting featured artful flowers by Roundtree Flowers. I love that Jessie used poppy seed pods in her arrangements.

veggie goodness: part 2: by guest blogger Nathalie

I had to make the recipe Nathalie sent me for a Moroccan-inspired cooked carrot salad (shown above on gleena dishes). It is delicious. Here is Nathalie's carrot (and more) farm stand adventure:

My husband and I live in a suburb of Los Angeles and we go out of our way to find and buy local produce from small farms (even in Los Angeles proper, there are small local farms in the most unlikely places). Whenever we can, we take a day to drive out to walk the dog somewhere with clean air that is calm and quiet like a beach or a hiking trail in the mountains. The routes always vary (okay, it is for us too, but the dog is a perfect excuse) and we sometimes come back with farm stand goodness. This weekend was no exception.

We piled into the car and drove up the coast to Santa Barbara with no real destination in mind. On a whim, I pulled over when I saw a little farm sign. What we found at this stop was pure heaven. A small farm (called Classic Organic Farm) with a peace sign painted on the side welcomed you to come in. Once inside the farm shop (no shopkeeper in sight, all based on an honor system) was packed with the most amazing looking produce we had seen in a while (of course, neither my phone, nor my camera were with me). Dandelion greens, garlic, onions, zucchini, cucumbers (several varieties), tomatoes, raspberries, and so on. We just knew we were onto something good. Needless to say, we stocked up. Total price for two huge bags full of produce: $12. They were sold out of the fresh eggs, so you can be sure we will find our way back at some point to try those out.

The highlight of the shopping splurge was two bunches of organically grown carrots which we cooked for dinner last night in a Moroccan style cooked salad. We had been saving this recipe for a good bunch of tasty carrots (which, even in the local farmers markets didn't quite measure up). We had high hopes for this batch and they did not disappoint us. I hope you enjoy!

Cooked Carrot Salad
For 2 generous dinner sized servings:

2 pitas
About a tablespoon of butter, melted

1 1/2 lbs organically grown carrots, scrubbed and cut into slices
(no larger than ½” thick).
4 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil, plus more for drizzling
6 ounces feta, crumbled
1 TBS whole caraway seeds, coarsely ground in a mortar and pestle.
2 TBS freshly chopped mint
Salt and Freshly ground black pepper (our favorite is Wynad pepper).

1.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Cut pita into triangles (about 8 or so each), brush both sides with melted butter and put them into the oven on a baking sheet for about 10 minutes (or until crisp).

2.
When the pita as done, take them out to cool, crank up the oven to 400 degrees. Meanwhile, toss the carrots in 2 Tbs of olive oil and season with salt and freshly ground pepper. Put in an ovenproof baking dish, cover with aluminum foil, and bake for about 45 minutes, or until the carrots are tender.

3.
Remove from oven and let cook slightly, and then mash (either by hand, or through a food processor), and mix in the remaining olive oil, caraway seeds and ½ of the mint. Season with salt and pepper.

4.
To serve, spoon ½ the carrot mixture on each plate, line the sides with the pita triangles, drizzle a little more olive oil over the carrots, and top with crumbled feta and mint.

Keeps for a day in the fridge.

veggie goodness

Inspired by Deb's blog entry on veggies from her garden and the farmer's market, I decided to show off some lovelies from yesterday's CSA pick up. And to point you toward Mark Bittman's blog in The New York Times called 101 Simple Salads for the Season. A must read, save and pass on (which many did as it is the No. 1 emailed article for a few days now). Now go forth and eat some veggies this weekend, and send me pics! asya@gleena.com
